Are Your Actions Congruent with Your Character?

“The truth of your character is expressed through the choice of your actions.” ~ Steve Maraboli

Father’s Day is this month, so this time of year always makes me think about my dad.

He passed away several years ago, and I still miss him deeply.

He was a man of tremendous character. The kind of person whose actions consistently reflected the values he lived by. He was honest, hardworking, reliable, fair, resilient, humble, and devoted to his family.

Perhaps what I admired most about him was that who he said he was and how he actually showed up were always aligned.

He had integrity.

Thinking about him is what inspired me this month to share this Masterful Mindset series with you on the topic of character.

Because honestly… I think all of us can benefit from a little reflection and growth in this area from time to time.

Character Is Revealed Through Action

When most people think about character, they think about personality.

But they’re not exactly the same thing.

Character traits are the attitudes, values, and behaviors that make up who you are and how you consistently show up in the world.

And whether we realize it or not, people are constantly observing character.

Think about it…

When you meet someone new, what are you paying attention to?

Are they kind?
Honest?
Respectful?
Patient?
Responsible?
Reliable?

And on the flip side…

Do they seem arrogant?
Selfish?
Careless?
Negative?
Dishonest?

We naturally look for clues about a person’s character because character tells us whether someone is trustworthy, safe, and aligned with the kind of relationships we want in our lives.

Actions Tell the Real Story

One of the simplest ways to assess character is this:

Watch people’s actions.

Because actions reveal what words often try to hide.

You can say you value honesty…
But do your actions reflect honesty?

You can say family matters most…
But do your actions reflect that priority?

You can say you want to be known as kind, disciplined, dependable, or positive…
But are you consistently showing up that way?

That’s the real question.

Are your actions congruent with the character traits you want to possess?

Patterns Matter

Now, to be fair, all of us have bad moments.

We all have difficult days when we don’t show up exactly how we’d like to.

That’s part of being human.

But character is revealed in patterns.

Consistent behavior tells the real story.

If someone repeatedly behaves in ways that are cruel, dishonest, manipulative, disrespectful, or irresponsible… pay attention.

Not from a place of judgment, but from a place of awareness.

Because recognizing character, both in others and in ourselves, is important.

Don’t Just Judge Others… Reflect on Yourself Too

It’s easy to evaluate the character of others. However, the harder yet more valuable work is evaluating our own.

So, let me ask you: What character traits describe you best right now?

And just as importantly… What traits do you want to strengthen?

Maybe you want to become:

  • More patient
  • More courageous
  • More disciplined
  • More compassionate
  • More dependable
  • More positive

Or maybe there are traits you know you need to let go of. That awareness matters.

Because, unlike personality tendencies, character can absolutely be developed and strengthened over time.

Growth Requires Intentional Action

You don’t build character through intention alone. You build it through repeated action.

Through the small daily choices no one else sees.
How you respond under pressure.
How you treat people.
How you handle adversity.
How you show up when things are difficult.

That’s where character is formed.

And the beautiful thing is…

Every day gives you another opportunity to become more aligned with the person you want to be.

Your Challenge This Week

Take some time this week to reflect honestly on your character.

Write down:

  • The character traits you believe you currently demonstrate most often.
  • The traits you want to strengthen.
  • And the actions that either support or contradict those traits.

Then ask yourself:

Are my daily actions aligned with the person I say I want to be?

And if not…

What needs to change?

Because growth begins with awareness, but transformation happens through action!

If you’re intentional about becoming your best self and strengthening the habits, mindset, and character traits that support that growth, tools that encourage daily reflection and action can be incredibly powerful.
